Now that Germany’s Intermot show and Italy’s EICMA exhibition are over, we’ve got a clear idea of the motorcycles that will be introduced over the next 12 months. Although the number of new models isn’t as large as we’re accustomed to seeing at this time of the year, the sheer diversity of new bikes is inspiring.

This crop of 2011 and 2012 offerings shows an almost unparalleled variety and further category fracturing and blending. We’re on tap to receive three cool entry-level, small-displacement sportbikes, an Italian power cruiser, a bleeding-edge Japanese literbike and the first inline 6-cylinder motorcycle engine we’ve seen in decades, among many other noteworthy machines.

Wandering at our leisure, with only the blue lines on our road map as our guide, we headed for the Rocky Mountains and the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. A Class C motorhome would be our habitat on wheels and provide all our beloved creature comforts, enabling us to make choices on the fly. We especially appreciated these comforts in winter camping conditions amidst the Rocky Mountains.

In the latest offering from Born Free Motorcoach (a 22-foot Rear Side Galley Class C Motorhome), enjoying the RV lifestyle is like being a turtle. Carrying our shelter with us, we could stop for the night wherever we decided the day should come to an end; bring our favorite foods with us; and sleep in our own bed.

The key factor for driving pleasure in the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is the outstanding performance.

Mercedes-Benz explained that the basis for this is the innovative body design. Indeed, the chassis and body are of aluminium, which means that the design combines intelligent lightweight construction with high strength.

"To achieve the same level of driving dynamics despite the lack of a fixed roof, the SLS AMG Roadster has features specifically designed to rigidify the bodyshell, for example side skirts with greater wall thicknesses and more chambers," Mercedes-Benz remarked.

Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari's chief executive and veteran engineer, says his all-new Ferrari FF four-seater is as fast around a track as a 599. "Not the GTO," he adds hastily, "but the regular 599." For the FF to be as fast as the shattering (and shatteringly hard-to-drive) GTO would be impossible. For it to be as quick as the regular 599 is merely miraculous.
Ferrari people are suspiciously keen to stress the Ferrari-ness of their new car. Could this be because the last time they strayed from their supersports heartland with the California, they suffered a squall of criticism for going soft and selling out?

A new rendering of the JP1 supercar, and a prototype, were revealed in Australia.

Aussie supercar builder Joss Developments Limited revealed new renderings of their tentatively-named JP1 supercar, painted red, to audiences in Melbourne. Introduced alongside the matte black JP1 prototype, company reps made the surprise announcement that the car will be capable of hitting 360 km/h (224 mph). That's a full 20 km/h (12 mph) faster than previously reported.

Mercedes GP PETRONAS driver Michael Schumacher has claimed he missed a glaring opportunity to record a fifth or even a fourth place finish at the recent British Grand Prix.

The German claimed a respectable ninth place finish at Silverstone, but afterwards expressed regret that he did not place even higher.

Minor tweaks for a popular model

Hyundai has quietly unveiled the 2012 Sonata facelift in South Korea.

Virtually indistinguishable from the current model, the car features a revised grille, restyled mirrors, LED taillights and new 18-inch alloy wheels. Interior changes are also minor, but include higher quality materials, revised trim and a cooled glovebox.
